It was his least favorite day of the year, yet one of his most favorite days too. It was the day he lost the love of his life, yet gained a new daughter.
He only took off of work for three days out of year: Christmas, Charlotte's birthday, and Aria's.
The day began the same way as each prior year, with Korso arriving at the cemetary at dawn to lay a bouquet on his wife's grave. His gaze fell upon her death date.
"Twenty years, huh?" he asked, looking up to the sky. "Your girls are doin' fine, love. They certainly got yer good looks. Charlotte's got a lot o' work in front of her, an' Aria's just a plain mess to deal with sometimes. But, they sure helped patch up the hole ya left in me."
He looked back at the date, reminding himself it was Aria's birthday.
"So I guess our baby girl is 20. I think I gave Charlotte of one yer belongings for her 20th. I guess I'll give Aria the same treatment...but what to give?"
A thought popped into his head, one that made me smile.

Later, at their mansion, Korso approached Aria's bedroom door while holding a white box with a red bow ontop.
He knocked twice.
"It's me," he said to the closed door, awaiting her to open it.

Aria had been in her room, getting ready for the party Charlotte was hosting for her. She was wearing a pink dress that had black lace over it. It was simple, but very cute. Charlotte had gotten it for her and had demanded she wear it today. And since it was a simple dress, Aria made sure to wear simple makeup. She didn't have it on so heavy like she usually did, except for her mascara. But thankfully her mascara always looked fantastic. Aria had just put her simple, lacey black headpiece with diamonds on it when she heard two knocks at her door. She turned around and smiled when she heard her father's voice. She got up and stopped at the mirror, making sure she looked good. Her dad always told her how she should wear things like this more often, so she wanted it to look good. Aria fixed her long hair that she curled a bit more. Her hair was naturally curly, but for today she had wanted it just a bit more curly. Once she made sure she looked presentable, she walked away from the mirror and to the door. She opened up the door and smiled up at her father, "Hello, Daddy," Aria said as she moved out of the way to let him in. (Dress - CLICK HERE Headpiece - CLICK HERE )

The door opened with Aria's welcoming face.
"Happy Birthday, baby," he said, kissing her cheek before stepping into her room. "You look beautiful as always."
He frowned as he eyed a pile of used dresses beside her bed. "Your room is a mess as always."
Korso immediately regretted his words. Today wasn't supposed to be just another parenting day, it was her day. Thus, he pulled back his criticism and forced a smile on his face as he sat on the edge of her bed, patting the spot next to him.
"Come sit, I have a present for you." He showed her the white box, then held it out for her to take. "Go on."

Aria's smile went bigger when Korso kissed her cheek and complimented how she looked. "You like it? Charlotte gave it to me," Aria said as she followed behind her father. Though her frown took place of the smile when he talked about how her room was a mess. Did he really need to say that? Aria asked herself as she stopped walking behind him for a moment. Her hands immediately playing with themselves as she wanted for more of a lecture. On my birthday too.. She thought to herself before she saw her father smile at her and sat on her bed. He pat the spot next to her and told her to sit next to him. He then showed her the long white box with a red bow. She sat down next to him and gently took the box from him. She wondered what it could be. Her father had always given her wonderful gifts. Dresses, necklaces, earrings, everything you could think of for females. But something about this seemed unfamiliar. Something about this seemed more important with how simple the box and ribbon were. Normally her Dad would go a little bit extreme with the wrapping, but this just had a little red bow around it. Aria looked up at him and smiled before she finally gained the courage to finally open it. And when she did, her emerald eyes widened. There in the box was a three string pearl necklace that had a flower in the front of it full of diamonds. It was beautiful and it was also bright white. It looked expensive. She was almost afraid to touch it.. "Dad, this is... This is gorgeous.." Aria said as she looked up at him in surprise. He had never given her a gift like this before. Yes, it is small, it's a bracelet. Just pretend it's a necklace and is bigger to fit around the neck

Watching her eyes sparkle nearly brought a tear to Korso's eyes. He had longed for this day, and hoped that she would apprecite the gift as much as her mother. It was originally a gift to her after all, a very special one.
Many years ago, Korso, a young "business" man, just coming into his first wave of financial success. At the time he was courting a very beautiful woman, one who was sweet, but also dangerous...enough to where the young playboy wouldn't dare touch another woman, but over time he didn't even need to be threatened with a knife to his penis, he naturally became devoted to her through the bond of love. So much so that when her 20th birthday arrived, Korso took her shopping and bought her everything she could ask for. But throughout the day he ran into a fancy jewelry store owner who showcased an elegant collection of pearl jewelry. Encased in glass, in the center of the store, was a pearl necklace and matching bracelets, said to have been warned by a royal princess.
As wealthy as Korso was, the store owner had them priced at a ridiculous amount that only a handful of people on Earth could afford. With that said, Korso followed the man into the back store room with a gun and a pair of pliers. Minutes later the man gave him a "special discount" on the merchandise. When he presented it to his lover, she replied with overwhelming joy, not because of its value, but because Korso got it for her without asking, and that his heart had sought it out instead.
"That's no ordinary pearl necklace, baby," said Korso to Aria, pointing to them as they lied in the box. "They are your mother's. Together, with the bracelets that I gave to Charlotte, they were her birthday present, now they belong to you an' yer sister." He took the box, walked to the mirror and then flagged her to stand beside him.
Facing the mirror, Korso volunteered to place the necklace on her. He smiled as the mirror showed their reflection and the pearls that now sat upon her. "She wore these on our wedding day. I hope you'll carry that tradition now," he said with a smile, eyeing his daughter's face in the mirror.

"Thats no ordinary pearl necklace, baby. They were your mother's."
Aria felt her heart stop and tears forming in her eyes when she heard what her father said. She looked at him in shock. She felt herself start to shake a little has he explained how he gave the necklace to her mother. And how the bracelets he had given Charlotte were also hers as well. Aria had known those her mother's, but she had no idea how special they were. She looked back at the necklace before Korso took the box out of her hand and stood next to her mirror.
She got up and walked to her father and moved in front of him. She lifted her hair and allowed him to put the pearls on her. He then told her how her mother wore the pearls to their wedding, and he had hoped she would carry on the tradition. This made her freeze as she let down her hair and stare at herself in the mirror. The pearls laid on her beautifully. It was almost like they were meant for her as well.
This made the tears that she was holding back finally fall down. She took a deep breath as she tried not to cry, but this was not a fight she was going to win. Her hands gently held the pearls on her as she felt herself break down a little. She had never thought she would get something from her mother. This was due to the fact her mother had died giving birth to her, which made today one of the hardest days for her. Even though it was her birthday, it was the day her mother died. And when she found out about that, she always carried that burden with her. Aria was told it was never her fault that her mother died, but she felt like it was.
Before Korso could say anything, Aria started to cry. "I'm sorry I took her away from us, Dad... I'm so sorry," Aria said as she weeped in front of him.

Before Korso could say anything, Aria started to cry. "I'm sorry I took her away from us, Dad... I'm so sorry," Aria said as she weeped in front of him. Joy left Korso's eyes, replaced by anger. Had it not been her birthday, he would've not hesitated to yell at her, or worse, but again... "It's her birthday, Korso...relax."
With a deep sigh, Korso embraced her, resting his chin on her head. "Don't ever say that," he said, as calmly as possible. "Yer mother was a strong lady, she could've put an end to it at any moment, but knowin' it would kill you...she chose to push through. Yer mother fought with every last ounce of strength to bring you into this world, so admire, not resent, her sacrifice."
He pushed her chin up and wiped her tears away. "Now yer gonna go out there an' celebrate life, an' make yer mother proud. Got it?" asked Korso, demanding a more enthusiastic response.

Aria immediately hugged him when he embraced her. Letting herself cry into his shoulder. She listened to what he told her and nodded her head slightly. She must've heard this a thousand times from him, and she knew he never liked it when she brought it up. But it was how she felt. And she knew how much her father had loved her. She also knew that she had died for two minutes as well. And it was why he was so protective of her. Aria also guessed that because of all of that event, it was why he seemed cold and harsh. She just wish he could relax at times and be like this.
She pulled away lightly when he picked her chin up and wiped away her tears. He demanded that she go out and celebrate and make her mother proud. She laughed a little and wipe her face. "I'm sorry Dad, I know you don't like it when I bring it up.. But, her death has been getting to me a lot today. I don't know why.. I just wish she was here with us," Aria said as she looked away from him before she looked at the mirror at the new pearls around her neck. The sparkle came back to her eyes as she touched them with her right hand.
"But with this it feels like she is.. Dad, thank you so much. You really do not understand how much this means to me. I promise to take the best care of them. I will protect them and carry the tradition. I'll make you proud, I promise," Aria said as she looked back at her Dad with a big smile. "I love you Daddy," Aria said before she gave him and big hug. A hug he hadn't felt from her in so long. "This is my favorite gift that you have ever given me. I promise to give you something just as special for yours!" Aria said a bit enthusiastic as she gave her Dad a little bit of a tighter hug.

Korso smiled at his daughter's thankful words.
"I know you'll make us proud," said Korso, as he imagined his baby girl following tradition and wearing the pearls on her wedding day. But for that to happen she'd need to find a man...a good one at that. With a sigh, he thought, "Guess I'll need to start allowin' her to date soon...but not yet..."
"Just worry 'bout yer birthday tonight, baby," said Korso, sounding more upbeat. "Yer sister should be here any minute so finish up."
He parted from his daughter and the necklace he had hidden for so many years. Now he felt that they were home on his baby girl, just as she would've liked.
Before leaving, Korso eyed the dirty clothes on the floor and said, "You can party tonight, but tomorrow this room needs some attention, ya hear me?" He turned back to her with a smile, to show her he was half-joking.
With that said he exited her room, knowing that the pearls were and would always be in good hands.
