Vanessa sat on the bar top as she counted the draw from the profits made that night. Every since the Don opened his own speakeasy profits at the Jive & Thrive had suffered a little. It wasn't anything to really worry about, but it annoyed her to no end.
He already is getting a small percentage of our profits and has every business in this wretched city in his pocket... What's the point? she thought, feeling agitated as she thought about the Moonlight Lounge.
The real reason she didn't make an appearance at the grand opening was because she just wasn't interested and was a bit bitter about it. She told Cale she hadn't been feeling too well and would meet up with him later there when she felt better.
Instead she took stock of everything in the Jive & Thrive, trying to get a sense of how to make it a little grander. One of their lead acts, the elder mob princess, Charlotte Marcello, had been taken by her father, so they lost a popular act. Charlotte had promised she would sing on occasion for them, but Vanessa wouldn't put money on it.
As much as she disliked the Don coming in and stealing their business she couldn't exactly hate the man. He helped them out more than he realized when Cale was working for him.
When she heard Cale enter from the apartment she didn't look up as she finished counting. “Well, we did better than last night but not as nearly as well as we did last month,” she stated as she put the money away to be taken to the vault in the office in the back.

Cale nodded as he got closer to Vanessa. The business hadn't been doing as well as it had a few months ago but that was to be expected with the Lounge opening up. He watched as she put the money into the cash bag to put it in the vault for the deposit at the end of the month.
"Don't worry about it V. the Lounge is still really new it's like a new toy in the toy box. Once the newness of the place eases up we'll get back up there." He promised. He knew Vanessa had been mad when she found out the Don was opening his own place and that that was the real reason she hadn't come to the opening but he was going to bug her about it. One thing he learned about Vanessa was if you tried to make her do something she didn't want to she'd come out swinging. "Things will level out soon." He put his hand on her shoulder as he reassured her.
"I talked to the Don last night and we're working on a plan to get ride of that Bluemoon Dope that keeps finding it's way in here. Next few days you see anyone using or think might be let me know and I'll take care of it ok?" He asked gently. He knew she hated that that young girl died in their bathroom because of that drug and she didn't like to talk about it.

She slammed the register draw shut at him mentioning the Bluemoon dope that had appeared suddenly. "Fine, fine, I'll tell you," she said a little coldly but it wasn't meant at him.
A sigh left her as she slipped off the bar top before leaning against him. "Let me guess... the Don's got you back in his pocket for the moment?" she asked, sounding annoyed and concerned. "You're supposed to be out of that life, Cale."
She hated the idea of him being back with the mob. Too many times she had to wrap a wound up or seen him come home covered in blood. The scars on his naked body were attractive and she loved staring at them, but she hated the prices he had to pay to get them.

Cale gave Vanessa a confused look as she slammed the register closed but realized why after just a moment. "Hey no, V it ain't like that I swear." He took her face in his hands. "I'm not doing that kind of work for him I'm just keepin' my eyes open. I can't keep the stuff out of here so whenever I find one I call one of the Don's guys and they handle it."
He pulled her back into a hug. "I know you hated when I did that and I'm not going back I promise. This work it just to get ride of Bluemoon the Don knows that. I don't think he even realized how bad it was till recently. And I ain't telling you what brought it to his attention. The less you know about that the better. I promise you I'm not back in the life or anymore in the Don's pocket then I was a month ago." He rubbed her back trying to reassure her.

Vanessa leaned more into him when he hugged her while giving him a doubtful look. "Right..." she mumbled before sighing as he reassured her that he wasn't back to that old life.
She wrapped her arms around him returning the hug. "Good... Because if I find out that you're in bed with him again I'll kill you," she promised before kissing his cheek.
"Now then," she said pulling back from him. "Be dear and take this keg to the back for me. The new bartender forgot to put it up, again. I swear if he does it one more time, he's out of here," she grumbled as she lightly tapped the keg with her toe of her heel.

Cale smiled as Vanessa kissed his check. "I have no doubt I'll be dead by morning if I do that." He told her with a laugh as she pulled back.
He bent over and carefully lifted the heavy keg onto his shoulder and carried it to the back room. "It is getting a bit annoying the guy forgetting to do this. It's his job after all. And he was late last week too." He told her as he came back into the main room. He put an arm around her shoulders drawing her close and kissed her temple.
"Just in case we might want to start looking for a new guy. We need someone we can depend on. You know how it goes. It starts with little things and then they get bigger." He commented as he looked around at Jive and Thrive.
"We do good work here don't we?" He said with pride. Jive and Thrive might not be as big and opulent as the Moonlight Lounge but it was beautiful and it was theirs. He shook her shoulders grinning down at her. "So what's left down here to do, V?" He asked her, sometimes things slipped his mind when it came to wrapping up for the night.
