“Awe she’s so cute!”, a young Annabelle squealed as she watched her father hold her new baby sister.
Alexander gave the baby a stink eye, “Nuh uh.”, he teased and laughed, “She looks like a potato!”. Their father chuckled along with him until Annabelle punched her twin brother. “Ow!”, he jumped in pain.
Their older brother, Michael laughed, “You looked like a potato too when you were born Alex.”, he said as he patted his younger brother on the back.
“No I didn’t!”, Alexander whined, “Isn’t that right mother?”, he turned to his mother to see her lying in the hospital bed, tired.
“Of course not Sweetheart.”, their mother said weakly with a faint smile before letting her eyes close.
Their father looked at his wife, cautious and confused. He set the baby in the basket that sat on a table next to her mother. “Why don’t you go take the twins down to the cafe real quick and get something to snack on?”, the father whispered to his eldest as he pulled out his wallet and grabbed some change. Michael nodded, grabbed the change, and escorted the twins out of the room. “Are you alright my love?”, the father asked worriedly as he sat down next to his wife and newborn child, “Genevieve.”, he said waiting for a response.
His wife slowly opened her eyes and looked up at him with a faint smile. “I-I love you Edgar…”, she said softly, her voice getting weaker, “Please tell the children that I love them just as much.”.
“Oh love don’t be silly.”, Edgar said with a nervous chuckle, “The children are only getting a snack. You’ll be able to tell them yourself once they return. “.
Genevieve’s eyes began to water. “I-I heard th-th...the doctor and…”, the words took too much energy out of her.
Edgar shook his head and began to tear up as he caressed his wife cheek and let her hold his hand. “No no no my love….You’ll be alright.”. She gave him one last smile before her eyes shut and her hand let go. “Genevieve….Genevieve!”, Edgar cried as he grabbed her hand and held it close to him, “Wake up please!”.
The twins ran in, each holding a small brown bag, “Look Mother! We got strawberry muffins!....Your favorite….”, Annabelle said in excitement until she saw her father.
“Why are you crying Father?”, Alexander asked as he glanced at his parents in fear, “She’s only sleeping...right?”. Michael had finally walked in the room, slowly closing the door behind him as he put the pieces of the scene in front of him together.
“It’s all her fault.”, Edgar mumbled as the children exchanged confused looks amongst each other, “It it weren’t for Lucille your mother wouldn’t be dead!”, their father yelled as he turned around and pointed to the baby in the basket. The room around her got darker as her family surrounded the basket she was lying in.
“What is wrong with you?!”, Michael yelled at her, they all screamed over the sound of the baby crying.
“You took my wife away!”, her father exclaimed.
“Our mother!”, the twins shouted at her.
Lucille quickly sat up to see herself awake in the present time(1918). “Lucille?!”, a voice yelled, “Luci!”. The voice revealed itself to be Eugene as he walked up to her doorway and knocked on the wall inside. “Are you just now waking up?”, Eugene asked with a chuckle as he walked into the room holding a white envelope in his hand. Lucille silently nodded in response. “You had that dream again didn’t you?”, Eugene asked, “Do you want to talk about it?”.
“For one it was a nightmare not a dream and two no I most definitely do not want to talk about it!”, Lucille snapped as she got up from her bed and walked to her closet.
Eugene sighed as he sat down on her bed after she walked away. “Well, do you at least want to know what this letter from the European general says?”, he asked.
Lucille hesitated before giving her answer, “Sure, will you please read it aloud?”, she requested as she continued to look through her wardrobe.
Eugene nodded, opened the envelope, then began to skim through it. His expression changed from bored to pitiful as he read the rest of the letter in silence.
Lucile grabbed a dress and trench coat, then turned to cousin, “Well what does it say?”, she asked him with a demanding tone.
“Your father and brother, Michael are...dead.”, Eugene responded, “I’m so sorry Lucille.
Lucille took a deep breath, in and out, then gave Eugene a straight face, “Good riddance to those two.”, she said as she walked into the bathroom and shut the door behind her. “Any word of Alexander?!”, she yelled from the other side of the door as she got dressed.
“He’s M.I.A.”, Eugene yelled. Lucille paused for a moment as her heart felt broken. Once she finished getting dressed, Lucille walked out of her bathroom, grabbed her hat and handbag, then walked out of the door. “Wait!”, Eugene yelled as he left the letter behind to chase after her, “Where are you going?”.
“Getting a job.”, she said blatantly.
“Since when have you wanted to be a working woman?”, Eugene chuckled.
Lucille rolled her eyes, then stopped to look at her cousin. “My sister and I agreed to start making money that way we can go to Europe and be home again. Well, now we know that Alexander will be there too.”. She turned around again and made her way to the front door.
“You two won’t be able to make enough money for your trip anytime soon.”, Eugene yelled from down the hall. Lucille walked out the door and slammed it behind her.
