“Bye Aunt Patty!”, Annabelle yelled from the front door as she held her suitcase, “We’ll be back on Monday! Well, that is if Lucille can hurry up!”.Lucille came rushing down the stairs with Eugene following behind her, carrying her suitcase. “I’m ready.”, she said as she grabbed her trench coat of the coat hanger. Eugene put down Lucille’s suitcase so he could give his cousins a hug. “Bye Eugene. Bye Aunt Patty!”, Lucille called out. As the girls finished their good-byes, they left for town.
Eugene walked into the kitchen to see his mother cleaning. “Where’s dad?”, Eugene asked as he grabbed a cookie from the glass jar that sat by the fridge.
“He’s out to take care of some business.”, Eugene’s mother said quickly as she refused to make eye contact with her son.
Eugene cocked his eyebrow at her and rolled his eyes. “He’s a farmer.”, Eugene stated with his mouth full, “What kind of business does he have outside the farm?”.
His mother turned around and snatched the bitten cookie from Eugene’s hand, “That’s for him to deal with and for you to not worry about.”, she said with a stern voice as she threw the cookie in the trash.
“Alright, damn.”, Eugene said as he put his hands up and backed out of the kitchen.
Later that night, Eugene was rounding up the cows to put them in the barn stables when he saw some suspicious figures walking toward his house. Eugene locked up the cows and ran over to see what was going on. He hid around the corner of his house as he watched the masked figures break in. A part of him wanted to stop them, but he knew that he didn’t have the strength to do so. When he finally decided to go inside and check on his parents, the men were already dragging them out by their arms. One man threw his father to the ground and pointed a gun to his head. “Where’s the money Florence?”, the man asked, “You know the boss ain’t gonna be happy if we leave with no money.”.
Mr. Florence looked up to see his son hiding by the house, “I don’t owe yer boss shit.”, he said as he turned to the man.
The man with the gun looked over his shoulder and nodded to another man who was holding Eugene’s mother. The man threw Eugene’s mother to the ground and shot her. “Does that refresh your memory?”, the gunman asked with a smirk, “Or do we gotta go get your son over there?”. Eugene backed away from the corner where he hid, worried about his fate to come.
“He ain’t my son and I don’t got yer money!”, Mr. Florence yelled. Eugene was upset and angry at the same time as he tried to fight back his tears. All of the sudden, he was startled by the gunshot. Eugene looked around the corner again to see his father’s fresh corpse on the floor.
The gunman motioned for his group to go inside the house, most likely to look for the money. “Check the attic.”, Eugene said as he walked in the house with his head down and pointed to the ceiling hatch that waited upstairs, visible from the front door. The gunman looked at Eugene confused, then looked up to see where he was pointing. The man ran upstairs and opened the hatch. One of them climbed up and came back down with a briefcase filled with money.
“Thanks kid!”, the gunman said as he poked Eugene with the gun and motioned for his men to leave.

“Eugene!”, Lucille yelled angrily as she threw her trench coat and hat on the coat hanger. “Why in bloody hell is there a ‘SOLD’ sign outside our house?!”, she asked as she walked in to see a bunch of packed boxes crowding their living room. Eugene came downstairs wearing a fancy suit and fedora whilst carrying a suitcase. “And what on Earth are you wearing?”.“One of Gatsberry’s finest.”, Eugene said with a cocky tone as he showed off his outfit, “Ya like?”. Lucille looked at him with so much anger that it gave him the chills. Eugene whistled nervously. “Well, the sold sign is because we no longer live here.”, Eugene said with an awkward chuckle, “We are moving into the great city known as Gatsberry!”. Lucille looked out the window to see a taxi pull up to the front of the house.
“You twat.”, Lucille mumbled in anger as she grabbed her suitcase that was mixed in the room of boxes. “Please tell me you have enough money to get us a decent house?”, she asked, trying to calm herself.
Eugene twiddled his fingers then looked at Lucille in fear, “I have enough for a decent apartment.”.
“Your joking right?”, Lucille scoffed at him. Eugene shook his head in response. “Unbelievable.”, she said annoyed as she nudged Eugene’s arm with her shoulder to walk out the front door.
“The money went to good use Luci!”, Eugene yelled as he ran out with his suitcase, “I bought us A LOT of nice clothes! You even got a bunch of make-up and jewelry!”.
