Eddie was about ready to boil over and shoot someone or something. She was a detective, dammit! She didn't need to be treated like a child just because she was a woman. Eddie raised herself to her full height against that annoying cop and clenched her fists against her stomach. "I would like to see the perp, if you please. I'm not asking again. Let me interview the perpetrator. I want his side of the story against what the victim claims happened" There was a ring or curious people watching the much taller cop face off against the diminutive woman with auburn hair and a resolute face. It was more entertaining than what they were there for, hence why they were staring.
The Cop chuckled and put his hands in his belt loops. "Listen doll, this is a man's place and talking to a perp is pretty serious business. Why don't you let the boys handle it and go dancing? I'll even do you the honor of going with you when I get off work" Eddie's eyes narrowed and she pulled out her detective license.
"I would like to see my perp, if you would be so kind mister. I'm perfectly capable of handling myself, and I'm sure in a police department there would be enough cops to dissuade him from harming me" The cop's face went beet red with anger but one look at Eddie's face and he turned and stiffly marched towards the holding cells, Edna following after with an air of victory.
~*~
Edna walked out of the area of the holding cells and adjusted her hat and brushed off her dress. She was satisfied, the story had held up against her client's and now she could start looking for the guy who's run off with the money. She had some good leads, too.

Eugene busted into the police station in his fancy suit to make a dramatic entrance. "Hello everybody!", Eugene yelled out. A brief moment of silence reined until officers and employees continued on with their discussions and duties. Eugene brushed off his suit and walked over to the front desk where his embarrassed cousin sat, trying to finish her work and ignore him. "How's it goin' Luci doll?", Eugene asked with a smirk.
Lucille looked up at him and cocked her eyebrow, "Luci doll?", she asked annoyed. As Lucille rambled on and complained about Eugene's idiocy, Eugene got distracted by something else. He walked up to the corner to see a woman and an officer arguing over a case. Lucille got up from her seat and stotmed over to Eugene. "Eugene! It's awfully rude to eavesdrop.", Lucille whispered.
Eugene waved his arm behind him to shoo her away, "Yea, yea,but a cork in it for a minute will ya?", he asked with attitude as he continued to listen in on the conversation. Eugene walked back to Luci's desk after the woman and officer walked to the back. "Woah.", he said in awe as he looked over his shoulder, "Who was she?", he asked as he turned back to Lucille.
"The new detective, Detective Wayne", Lucille said as she continued to do her work.
"Why aren't you more like her?", Eugene asked jokingly.
~°~
One long argument later, Eugene took a glance behind him to see the woman from earlier leaving the building. "Gotta split Luci, bye!", he said excitedly as he ran out the buliding, chasing after the woman. "Dective Wayne!", Eugene called out to the woman as he caught up to her. "What you did back there earlier was pretty inpressive ma'am.", Eugene said as he took a deep breath after panting.

Eddie walked out of the police department with her head held high, but paused and turned to stare at the bespectacled man ran over to her. She felt her cheeks warm slightly at the compliment but she kept her cool and just grinned. "All in a day's work mister. I've gotta be tough when it comes to boorish people who think a woman's job is just to be a secretary or a mother or something" she said with the weary and annoyed air of someone who had heard things similar her entire life.
She shook her head and held out a hand to be shaken. "I'm Edna Wayne, but most everyone calls me Eddie. Pleased to meetcha, mister whoever you are" she gave a small laugh. "Glad you think I'm impressive. Most folks don't take me seriously, because I wear a skirt and make-up" She made an annoyed face.

Eugene nodded in agreement to every word the woman said. He was a bit nervous when she talked about the people who annoyed her. "I totally get it.", Eugene said with a small chuckle, "I tell my cousin that all the time. She refuses to listen to me, but ya know...I make it clear".
Eugene stepped closer to the woman to shake her hand, "Nice to meet ya Eddie.", he said. Eugene laughed along with Eddie, "Florence, Eugene Florence", he introduced himself, "Most people stick to Eugene", he said as he let go of her hand. Eugene chuckled nervously, "Well, my mom was always...tough on me as a kid and after living with my cousin for the last eleven years, kinda had to learn how to not underestimate a woman the hard way.". Eugene let out a deep breath after seeing Eddie's annoyed face. "So, where ya headin' now?", he asked.

Eddie kept a firm grip and looked up at Eugene ,who was much taller than her, and smiled. "Not every woman can, it's a tough road to go down on ,with taking a man's job. I respect secretaries, working with fellas who don't take you seriously is tough work" She laughed and let go of his hand. "Nice ta meetcha Eugene" She smiled at the thought of him learning to respect women the hard way. Most men did learn respect that way, it was just the way things were.
She shrugged. "To the bar to check out a bartender" she said, keeping it general. "A lady's brother got stabbed and the guy who did it was looking for money. I just talked to him so now I'm gonna talk to other people who might know where the lady's brother hid the money" She grinned in excitement. "I just love a good puzzle, don't you?"

Eugene nodded with a faint smile as Eddie spoke about how men don't take women seriously in the workplace. He felt kinda guilty because he use to be one of those people. Eugene found it strange that his cousin wanted to get a job, let alone a job at the police station when he first heard about it. He teased her about being a secretary for awhile, but like he said, he eventually had to learn a lesson.
Eugene cocked his eyebrow as Eddie explained her case. "Wow.", he said, "And Lucille thinks I have a money craving problem.", he mumbled. Eugene smirked, "Sure, puzzles are great.", he said. "But how is checking out a bartender gonna fit into this puzzle?", Eugene asked with a small chuckle, making his own assumptions. "Well, I can give ya a ride if you want.", he offered. "Kinda forgot to get my cousin lunch anyway, so I can give you a ride outta there on my way back as well.", he said with a smile.

She laughed at his comment. "You do have a fancy suit" she complimented. "But this guy was pretty loaded. Had saved 10 grand for a rainy day, and told the wrong person over a drink. Now he's dead and I'm trying to find the money so his sister can get some of the money to support herself-unless she got the whole even set up, then it goes to her sick husband and young son" she nodded to herself and smiled at Eugene. "Nah, I'll catch a bus or something. Hoofing it doesn't bother me mister. Did a lot of walking in Los Angeles when I lived there. I'll get by just fine walking here" she beamed at him and patted an area just above where her skirt ended in a meaningful way and winked at him.

Eugene smirked with confidence, "Why thank you. I hope.", he chuckled. "10 grand for a rainy day?!", Eugene asked surprised, "Man, the highest amount of money saved up where I came from was 100, 150 if ya pa didn't find the stash to buy beer.", he joked. "I wish the best for the family.", Eugene said with a single nod. "Low Angeles huh?", he asked to reassure himself, "I almost assumed a gal like you grew upon the countryside.". Eugene looked down at where Eddie patted her skirt, confused for a brief moment. Eugene let out a small nervous laugh, "Y-ya actually carry...a gun", he whispered. The closest Eugene has been to a real gun was a shotgun when his dad bought onefor his 15th birthday. The present didn't stick around long since his mom wasn't a fan, but at least he can say he's been near a gun before. "Well at least let me tag along.", he said, "It'd be rude of me to let a pretty lady walk alone, wouldn't it?".

She shrugged. "I didn't ask but I get the impression the family has less than legal connections" she shruggedd again. It wasn't her place to judge. Just benefit from actually solving the murder. She smiled slightly at the joke. "I've always come from a well off family. My parents are in the movie business, see. Mama looks younger than her years so she's always in romances and papa is the villain in Lone Ranger movies, and a few Sherlock Holmes" she laughed. "Me? a country girl? Naw, I respect them but I could never live in the country" she made a small face. "Utter boredom, no offense" She rolled her eyes at his reaction. "I very well can't do the job I do without carrying heat, can I? I have my license and everything" she shrugged and turned, beckoning him to follow. "Let's get your cousin something to eat first, then I'll bid you adieu and go investigate" she told him with a smile.

Eugene gave a nervous whistle, "Oh boy.", he said. Having illegal connections never end well, which was an ironic thought coming from someone who is trying to get good with the biggest gang in town. Eugene nodded as he listened to Eddie explain her backstory. "The movie business sounds fun.", Eugene said with a dull tone, "Honestly, I've never seen anything that requires a television.", he chuckled. Eugene shrugged when Eddie called the farm life boring, "That is very true, don't blame ya.", he said, "Sucks too when your folks give ya a life sentence of farm chores they never planned to do. I only had an open field and few books to entertain myself over the years. Tried to sneak a radio in the house, but Pa destroyed it 'worried' that it would interupt his naps.", he laughed.
Eugene nodded and waved his finger slightly, "Very good point.", he responded to Eddie's question. Eugene paused for a moment as Eddie turned and spoke. "Wait really?", he asked, surprised that she agreed to grab food for his cousin with him, "Wow okay sounds good!", he said excitedly as he walked up to Eddie. "Where do ya wanna go?", he asked. "I'm still new to the city and I've only ordered food from the room service at our hotel.", Eugene said until nervousness struck him in the head, "Not trying to sound like a rich snob, 'cause I'm the exact opposite m'lady...uh, Eddie.", he said with a nervous laugh, "Grew up on a farm for Pete's sake heheh....Where do ya wanna eat is the important question mixed in the rambling.". Eugene kept his mouth shut, put his hands in his pants' pockets, and waited for a response, if he was lucky enough to get one.

"Oh boy indeed" she said with a nod. "Not that I don't support it, people have to make money where they can. I just got lucky having movie stars as parents" She nodded to him. "I don't have a set either. Not enough time in the day to watch anything, but I love going to movies, if you ever want to join me" she smiled a little shyly at him before getting back to business.
"Really really mister" she said with a chuckle. "Let's go to that little diner and buy some sandwiches" she laughed. "Nah, just a newbie to the city. I've been here bout a month see. Still new but I get around. Take note of all the interesting places in the city. let's go mister" she began walking with her hands in the pockets of her overcoat.

Eugene nodded, "Very lucky.", he said with a faint smile. Eugene had a big from on his face when Eddie mentioned the movies. Her shy smile was adorable to him. "Well, luckily I've never been on a movie date before so you could show me the ropes huh?", he teased and gave Eddie's arm a small nudge.
"Sandwiches sound good.", Eugene agreed. He chuckled when told to make note of interesting places, "Will do ma'am. Lead the way.", he said gesturing forward as Eddie began to walk.
"So, what brought ya to this city?", Eugene asked eagerly as he walked alongside Eddie. "I'm assuming it was for the detective job? But couldn't you get one in Las Angeles? I'm not complaining of course, just...askin'.".

She laughed and gave him a wink. "I'll do that, then" she said coyly. She continued walking and talking, careful not to lose Eugene as she walked. "Well mama and papa are just the sweetest people, but they are so protective of me! And stifling. No guns, no chemicals, no dead bodies to examine. And especially no sleuthing! It was all dresses and parties and stuffy bores trying to court me. I just couldn't stand it! So I moved as far away as I could get so I could do what I wanted and finally have some breathing space" she gave him a sideways glance. "Why'd you move to the city?"

Eugene chuckled, "I can see why they were so overprotective of you.",he said,"Their only daughter wants one of the most risky jobs possible". Eugene shrugged, "I don't know, sounds like fun compared to my backstory", he stated with a nervous laugh, "At least they cared right?". Horrible memories tried to flood Eugene's mind as he kept his head down for a moment while he walked. "Hm?", he looked up to see Eddie glancing at him, "Oh, oh...um, well let's just say I found something I wanted to be a part if and I had to move here to get closer to it.", he said with a faint smile. "I had to sacrifice my parents' farm, but it's not like they were around to stop me.", he said with a nervous laugh as his mind began to drift elsewhere again as they walked.

She smiled a little sadly. "I'd be a cop or a lawyer if I could. Maybe one day it'll be more acceptable for women to take risky jobs" She touched his arm. "Whatever your backstory is, at least you have the present and future. You're not where you were" she said with a smile. She raised an eyebrow. "Where's your parents? Were they okay with you selling their farm?"
